Original Medicare provides only very limited coverage under certain conditions for travel outside the US.
Medicare Supplement plans C, D, F, G, and N purchased on or after June 1, 2010 and plans C, D, E, F, G, H, I and J purchased before that date provide limited foreign travel emergency benefits. The other Medicare Supplement plans (i.e. A, B, K, L and M do not provide any foreign travel emergency benefits.) If you have Original Medical with or without a Medicare Supplement plan and are taking one or more foreign trips you should consider purchasing an International Travel plan.
Medicare Advantage Plans may provide different international travel benefits and you should check with your Medicare Advantage provider if you have adequate protection when you travel abroad. If you don’t, you should also consider purchasing one of these plans.
